Cadent Engineering Bulletin EB/785

The application and use of Smart Methane Detectors as supplied by Smart Compliance® for extra leakage checks on Cadent-owned assets

Introduction

Cadent has recently evaluated the use of Smart Methane® detectors on MOBs risers in the London Network, proving that the equipment could provide additional leakage checks in between planned CAD/PM/MOB/43 checks.

Smart Methane® units are ATEX zone 2 rated, and wake at pre-determined cycles to take gas readings. Where the sampled reading is above 4.5% LEL, the unit alarms through inbuilt intrinsically safe circuitry and SIM card to a portal.

The portal alerts pre-approved personnel via the automated text system, where the receiver of the text then raises an escape via the National Gas Emergency number. The portal also holds a database of results.

Information for First Line Managers and Operatives

  • The Smart Methane® Detector can be installed by an operative who has completed the appropriate training
  • Gas leakage readings are customisable (by the manufacturer) at pre-determined times
  • For internal use only, allowing the planning of permanent solutions with customers, residents and building owners etc., enhancing our customer satisfaction.
  • There is potential to use the detector for other applications where the Smart Methane® detector could be used inside buildings to check for gas leakage.
  • Additional alerts are registered on the portal in the event of detector movement, low battery or if the equipment is tampered with

Battery life, and purchasing

The batteries installed into the Smart Methane® detector have an expected duty of 18 months and can be changed by appropriately trained Cadent personnel when the portal alerts to a low battery.
